Fatigue strength of normal and high strength steel joints improved by weld profiling

چکیده

While some post-weld treatment techniques increase the fatigue life mainly due to induced compressive residual stress others are trying create a smooth transition at weld toes. One of latter is profiling. This study investigates effect profiling for four different steel types from S355 S900 including one duplex stainless-steel and performs comparison with high frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) treatment. The observed strength improvement significantly higher than typically assumed such comparable increases HFMI further parent material only slightly below estimated material. Finally, design curves proposed that include an increasing materials, but still conservative low quality.

Improved Material Models for High Strength Steel

The mechanical behaviour of the three advanced high strength steel grades, Docol 600DP, Docol 1200M and HyTens 1000, has been experimentally investigated under various types of deformation, and material models have been developed, which account for the experimentally observed behaviour. Two extensive experimental programmes have been conducted in this work. In the first, the dual phase Docol 60...

The Influence of Ultrasonic Impact Treatment on Fatigue Behaviour of Welded Joints in High-strength Steel

The unabated growth of the steel industry and progressively increasing operating loads on metal structures generate a need for a search for optimum engineering solutions to improve the loadcarrying capacity and reduce metal consumption. One way of resolving this problem is to utilise high-strength steels. It is common knowledge however that the improvement of the steel strength is accompanied b...

Microstructural characterisation of as-deposited and reheated weld metal — High Strength Steel Weld Metals

The problems encountered with the interpretation of martensite and the various forms of bainite that are found in high strength steel weld metals have been addressed. Field emission gun scanning electron microscopy was found to overcome resolution difficulties often met with light optical microscopy and conventional scanning electron microscopy. The various microstructural constituents were cha...

Strength Recovery in a High-Strength Steel During Multiple Weld Thermal Simulations

BlastAlloy 160 (BA160) is a low-carbon martensitic steel strengthened by copper and M2C precipitates. Heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructure evaluation of BA160 exhibited softening in samples subjected to the coarse-grained HAZ thermal simulations of this steel. This softening is partially attributed to dissolution of copper precipitates and metal carbides. After subjecting these coarse-graine...

Fatigue Properties of the Ultra-High Strength Steel TM210A

This paper presents the results of an experiment to investigate the high cycle fatigue properties of the ultra-high strength steel TM210A. A constant amplitude rotating bending fatigue experiment was performed at room temperature at stress ratio R = -1. In order to evaluate the notch effect, the fatigue experiment was carried out upon two sets of specimens, smooth and notched, respectively. In ...
